Hiring: WRFI News Director (part time)
WRFI is seeking to hire a part-time News Director who will oversee and develop news programming at the station and who will train and direct volunteers and interns within the News department. The station is also currently accepting proposals for news content collaborations.
WRFI is volunteer-driven, community radio for Ithaca and Watkins Glen, NY. We are a living wage employer and employ three part-time staff members. We broadcast a mix of local and syndicated, news, public affairs, and music programming and are committed to airing local and underrepresented perspectives in keeping with the following values: peace, justice, sustainability, freedom of expression, cultural diversity, integrity, and joy.
WRFI strongly prefers a candidate possessing degree in journalism and/or three years professional experience in journalism, preferably in a multi-platform news environment including radio or other audio production. Candidates with other relevant backgrounds are also encouraged to apply. Familiarity with independent- and community- media and news programming standards and values preferred. Successful candidate will possess broad knowledge of local and regional issues and their connections to national and international issues. Must have ability to work within a live program environment. Experience in broadcast production, web content, news writing, news editing and on-air hosting are strongly preferred. Must possess effective communication and interpersonal skills. Other preferred skills include online research, multimedia production, word and spreadsheet processing and operation of light office equipment. Must have excellent memory for details, be able to make cold calls and “knock on doors,” be able to meet daily deadlines under potentially stressful conditions and deal effectively with multiple competing tasks.

WRFI News Director Job Description
The Community News Director (ND) leads and manages the planning, production and presentation of news for WRFI Community Radio. The ND supervises the news department staff. The ND reports to the general manager and works in cooperation with station leadership and staff to support the station mission.
The ND has responsibility for news planning, reporting, editing and production within the context of WRFI’s collaborative community radio news team. The ND helps define and maintain ethical, editorial, artistic and technical standards for broadcast news programs. The ND assists with news programming decisions and news operations. The ND, as the station’s top news authority, is responsible for the journalistic integrity of all station news activities and platforms. The ND is not responsible for content of syndicated news programming but may advise programming staff thereon.
Editorial Planning, Scheduling, Editing (40%)
The ND directs the activities of the volunteer news staff to develop story ideas, track issues and events, select reporters for coverage, schedule stories for publication, book interviews, and schedule time for interviewing, writing and editing.
The ND serves as a primary editor to insure news reports are produced in an effective, timely and responsible manner.
The ND acts as a proactive liaison to various internal and external constituencies to advance and source the station’s news programming. These may include volunteers, station staff and other local and national news organizations.
Reporting, Anchoring (20%)
The ND is part of the news team and contributes content on a regular basis. The ND or designee anchors scheduled newscasts, hosts talk programs, appears as a program guest, and produces various spots, features, special programs, web content, etc.
Administration of Personnel, Budget, Technology (30%)
The ND helps set goals and monitor performance of volunteer news personnel. Personnel management includes recruitment and training in collaboration with other station staff. The ND manages the news department budget — including annual planning, monthly monitoring and routine handling. The ND helps maintain equipment and information systems vital to news planning, news gathering, news production and news presentation.
Community Relations and Support (10%)
The ND seeks opportunities to promote public contact to help ascertain public needs, build community engagement and bolster station success. The ND participates in station events and fundraising activities as appropriate.
The ND adheres to deadlines and makes timely and effective decisions in situations requiring prompt attention. The ND is the news department primary leader during crisis response.
