Yesterday, the New York State Department of Health confirmed the discovery of a case of polio. According to CNBC, the infected person is a resident of Rockland County. The case is believed to stem from the oral-polio vaccine, which contains a mild virus strain that is still able to replicate. This vaccine is not administered in the United States, so the chain of infection is believed to have begun outside the country. This is the first case of polio in the United States since 2013, and health care providers are encouraged to be on the lookout for additional cases.
