Al Sharpton Convening Meeting of Black NY Leaders

Al Sharpton is organizing a meeting of Black leaders in New York in an attempt to find ways to fight crime. According to Politico, the invite list will include Attorney General Letitia James, the state’s three Black US attorneys, as well as the mayors of New York and Buffalo and others. Concern over a rise in crime was used effectively by Republicans in the midterms who took three former Democratic seats in Congress. The influential reverend and activist says he understands there may not be broad agreement on all strategies to address crime, but that he hopes the group can coalesce around a few. One issue where consensus may be hard to reach is bail reform. The issue became a political football in the midterms and New York Democrats still disagree on efforts to roll back the reforms. New York City’s centrist Mayor Eric Adams, a Democrat and former police captain, believes the 2019 reforms that eliminated cash bail in many circumstances went too far. However other Democrats like State Senate Majority leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins disagree. Regardless of how Sharpton’s meeting goes, crime is expected to be a top issue in Albany in the new year.
