- Steuben County Sheriff sues county legislature over insurance coverage -

The Steuben County sheriff is challenging a county legislature vote last week to repeal a local law that would provide with defense and indemnify his position. Indemnification means he would be protected against personal financial loss if he were sued for something done as part of his job. Sheriff Jim Allard says the law was passed with little public input. The Elmira Star-Gazette reports there was a public hearing about the matter in August. Allard was the only person who spoke about the law. The New York Supreme Court has issued an order to show cause which prevents the county from making the change immediately. If the County legislature prevails the sheriff would have to buy his own insurance.
