- Broome County gets $6.3 million grant for lead poisoning detection program -

The Broome County Health Department has gotten a $6.3 million grant to eliminate lead poisoning hazards. WBNG-TV says the funding is from the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development to address lead paint and other hazards over the next four years. That should be enough money to make fixes to about 180 housing units. Privately owned rental properties and owner-occupied homes can apply for the funding. - Binghamton University gets federal tech designation -

Binghamton University has gotten another boost to its growing electric battery industry. Binghamton is one of 31 regions in the country to get a federal Tech Hub designation. The designation makes the regional tech consortium called New Energy New York or NENY eligible for tens of millions of dollars in federal funding to develop battery research, development, and manufacturing. NENY has 68 members including Binghamton and Cornell universities, and the Community Foundation of the Southern Tier. The announcement was made by several members of the New York congressional including Senator Chuck Schumer and Representative Marc Molinaro.
